Students learn from doing open-ended assignments, for example by experiencing the consequences of their mistakes.
I think it's also very good as a sort of learning experience, especially if you're not yet working in IT, to see that what you planned to get done, that turns out to be a bit of a let-down in the end.
We give them two lectures on Scrum with the same content. The first Scrum-lecture we tell them how it all works. The second Scrum-lecture happens after the first sprint. And we give them the exact same information again, just expressed differently. And I often got the comment: 'Why didn't you tell us earlier?' I did, but now you know. So show, don't tell.
